The history of the Vulture mine forms an important chapter in the history of the Territory of Arizona, and one is not complete without the other.
Discovery of the Vulture mine, followed by the discovery of placer gold at La Paz (on the Colorado river 7 miles north of the town of Ehrenberg), and at Webber Canyon (10 miles northwest of Wickenburg), caused great excitement in the mining world. Very Large vein structures and extraordinary richness of its ore, attracted adventurous spirits from across the country.
The mine was discovered in October, 1863, by Henry Wickenburg, who was accompanied on a prosppecting trip by two men, named Von Bibber and "Verde" Green. After discovering a mine, the party returned to the present site of Wickenburg and a short time thereafter Von Bibber and Green left the country and never returned.
In May, 1864, Mr. Wickenburg commenced an active mining operation which yielded from $80 to $100 per ton.
The history of the area is dynamic. Please see the below listed historical documents and articles.
